The Student Leaders Program is an eight-week summer experience for high school juniors and seniors who learn leadership skills through hands-on community work and a Student Leadership Summit in Washington, D.C. Applications are now open for the 2014 program.

DFC Information Session RESCHEDULED!

Due to unforeseen changes, the DFC Information Session has been changed to Thursday, October 10^th at 6PM. The location will take place at the Children's Aid Society, 9th floor boardroom. For those who have already registered from the original training date will have to re-register again.  This will allow attendance accuracy, no walk-ins allowed.

COMMUNITY NETWORKING SEMINAR: UNITED WE STAND

The United-We-Stand Campaign empowers local neighborhoods to help prevent underage drinking by engaging in educational, service learning, and media advocacy activities.

This seminar will provide information and materials on how community organizations can partner with community members, local store owners, and teens to stop minors from illegally obtaining alcohol from grocery stores; reduce the over-promotion of alcohol advertising; and spotlight caring and responsible merchants working to keep neighborhoods safe and healthy places to work and live.

Strategies/Tools include: Conducting Alcohol Compliance Checks, Starting a Sticker Shock Project, Recognizing Responsible Business Owners (Unstung Heroes), and Exploring Alcohol Advertising (Neighborhood Ad-count).

Who Should Attend: Individuals, Non-Profit Agencies, Youth Serving Organizations, Civic and Neighborhood Groups interested in identifying youth, adult, and volunteer activities and service projects focused on community safety and well-being.

Democracy, Imagination & Peeps of Color: Brooklyn Community Dialogue

A civic performance and dialogue with Bed-Stuy youth and community members, this event is the culmination of a 3-day intensive workshop inspired by Sekou Sundiata's provocative speech, Thinking Out Loud: Democracy, Imagination and Peeps of Color. The students are engaging with ideas about democracy, citizenship and art, developing their own performance pieces as a creative response and will present them alongside works by poets Kesed and Jeffrey Dessources. Youth Work Stipend Program

 

 

The Youth Works Program addresses the needs of 105 young adults each year ages 18-24 helping them attain: (a) skills in literacy and numeracy, (b) opportunities for career exploration, (c) workforce readiness training and certification, (d) an internship, and (e) either permanent employment or further training or education. Summary:   The New York City Department of Education on behalf of the Office of Safety and Youth Development (OSYD) is seeking proposals from vendors including organizations, foundations and consortiums that have the capacity to oversee Community Based Organizations (CBOs), which focus on reducing chronic absenteeism and preventing student dropouts, and to pair these CBOs with NYCDOE schools that are eligible for Attendance Improvement and Dropout Prevention (AIDP) funds.

The successful proposer will collaborate with OSYD to solicit, select, replace, monitor, manage, pay, evaluate, and provide technical assistance to CBOs. Additionally, the awarded vendor will work with OSYD to select participating AIDP schools and will identify the best CBO to school partnerships. In consultation with OSYD, the awarded vendor will advise CBOs about service changes, identify common reasons students are missing school and ways to address the underlying issues, and provide reports on CBOs performance.

Crown Heights' Arts to End Violence Festival 2013

The Arts to End Violence festival is composed of multiple events, including a block party for youth and community members to engage in art making, and an Art Showcase that displays selected submissions by local professional artists and winners of our youth art contest.
This year's festival calendar will be as follows:

February 1st: Accepting submissions to arts contest (more information below).
April 1st: Deadline for submission to contest
May 18th, 2013: Arts to End Violence Block Party
May 23rd, 2013: Gallery Opening event for the Arts Showcase. Art will remain on display through June 9th, 2013 in the Ron Taylor Gallery at 1160 St. John's Place.
June 5th, 2013: Arts to End Violence Spoken Word event

Learn how the power of photographs can be used to change your community. The NYC Prevention Resource Center presents the Photovoice Interactive Seminar. During this seminar you will learn how images in your community can be transformed into powerful messages for community change.

 

This interactive seminar will provide you with the opportunity to learn about Photovoice and conduct your own Photovoice project. We will also allow time to plan your own approach and determine its use in your community.
